INAUGURATION OF MY THUAN 2 BRIDGE: A BRIDGE WITH VIETNAMESE BRAND AND THE SPIRIT OF VIETNAMESE ENGINEERS

On the morning of December 24, 2023 in Tien Giang, Project Board 7 (Ministry of Transport) held the inauguration ceremony of My Thuan 2 Bridge. The event took place simultaneously with the expansion project of Dien Bien airport and 2 expressways Tuyen Quang - Phu Tho, Vinh Long - Can Tho.

The event was organized, connected online at 4 points and attended by Mr. Pham Minh Chinh - Prime Minister; Mr. Do Van Chien - Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (at Dien Bien bridge), Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai (at the event point of My Thuan 2 bridge - Tien Giang), Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang (at the event point of Vinh Long province), Deputy Minister of Transport, comrades of the Central Party Committee, some comrades leading ministries, departments, central branches and localities.

My Thuan 2 bridge has a total length of 6.61km, connecting the two expressways Trung Luong - My Thuan and My Thuan - Can Tho, connecting the two provinces of Vinh Long and Tien Giang - this is a vital road, with the largest traffic volume among the main national highways in the region, helping traffic to be more convenient and faster by shortening the travel time from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho to 2 hours.
This is a large cable-stayed bridge in the top of cable-stayed bridge projects in Vietnam. The bridge is built on a foundation of more than 2,000 bored piles with a diameter of 2.5m fixed 120m deep into the riverbed, with a scale of 2 piers, each 120m long, connected to 128 cable-stayed bundles. Nearly 200 beam blocks, with a load capacity of nearly 100 thousand tons, were constructed and completed by the Trungnam E&C engineering team in 26 months.

“And the special thing about this cable-stayed bridge is that the desire for technological autonomy and mastery of construction techniques has made the entire team of engineers join hands, determined to construct, closely following the project items day and night. It is for this reason that today I am proud to affirm the mettle of Vietnamese engineers and the Vietnamese character in the construction techniques of My Thuan 2 Bridge,” said Mr. Bui Manh Hung.



My Thuan 2 Bridge connecting Tien Giang and Vinh Long is a large cable-stayed bridge in Vietnam.


Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Prime Minister emphasized the advantages of My Thuan 2 Bridge - the first and largest cable-stayed bridge in the country designed and constructed by Vietnamese people, in terms of 100% domestic investment capital, larger bridge size than before and creating jobs for people. At the same time, the Prime Minister praised the contractor Trungnam EC and affirmed that this is a typical learning experience for the ability to master technology for other projects.
In addition, the Prime Minister emphasized the advantages of My Thuan 2 Bridge compared to My Thuan 1 Bridge: Longer, higher, wider; My Thuan 1 bridge uses 66% foreign capital, My Thuan 2 uses more capital and is domestic capital; My Thuan 1 was designed and constructed by foreign countries, while My Thuan 2 is a large-span cable-stayed bridge project carried out entirely by a team of Vietnamese engineers and workers in all stages, with the prominent role of the contractor Trung Nam Group, marking the growth and maturity of Vietnamese human resources; the investment rate of My Thuan 1 is about 5,000 USD/m2 while My Thuan 2 bridge is about 2,400 USD/m2, which means saving about 50%; creating more jobs and livelihoods for people.

After more than 26 months of construction, overcoming difficulties due to the pandemic, the increase in prices of raw materials and the terrain of deep rivers with fast flowing water, and the geological factors of the Mekong Delta have also posed many challenges for the construction and design team. But with their own experience and capacity, the Trungnam EC team in particular, and the joint venture in general, have proven their ability to respond and adapt well to unfavorable conditions from nature and the market and exceed the schedule set out.

The My Thuan 2 bridge project with an investment capital of 5,000 billion VND after being inaugurated and put into use - connecting with the Trung Luong - My Thuan expressway, will help the people of the Western provinces to travel to Ho Chi Minh City more easily and conveniently; Promote economic development and regional connectivity, reduce traffic congestion on National Highway 1 through the West. This is the basis for the Mekong Delta to develop further in the coming time.
