PRIME MINISTER SETS DEADLINE FOR OPENING CHAU DOC – CAN THO – SOC TRANG EXPRESSWAY

TPO - On the afternoon of December 28, during an inspection of the Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang expressway construction site, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested investors and contractors to accelerate progress, ensure quality, and strive to achieve technical opening to traffic by June 30, 2026.

The Phase 1 Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang expressway construction investment project has a total length of 188.2 km, with a scale of four lanes and a total investment of VND 44,691 billion. This is an important east–west expressway axis of the region, passing through An Giang Province and Can Tho City (prior to administrative consolidation including An Giang, Can Tho, Hau Giang, and Soc Trang).

The project is divided into four component projects, with provincial People’s Committees assigned as the managing authorities. Of these, the section passing through An Giang Province was technically opened to traffic on December 19.

On the afternoon of December 28, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his delegation conducted an on-site inspection of the Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang expressway.

According to the Can Tho Transport and Agricultural Construction Investment Project Management Board (the investor for the Can Tho section), the expressway segment within the city comprises three component projects (Projects 2, 3, and 4), with a total length of 132 km and a total investment of VND 31,288 billion. To date, overall construction volume has reached approximately 49%; bridge works alone have exceeded 80%, with 100 bridges currently under simultaneous construction.

During an on-site inspection in Long Hung Commune (Can Tho), the Prime Minister emphasized the requirement that “the sooner it is completed, the more cost savings are achieved,” so that local people and authorities can soon benefit and open up new development space. He reiterated the requirement that the project must be technically opened to traffic by June 30, 2026.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh visited, encouraged, and presented gifts to workers currently working on the expressway.

The head of the Government stressed that project progress must go hand in hand with quality assurance, occupational safety, and environmental sanitation, and that contractor management must be tightened to avoid having too many contractors on a short section of the route.

The Secretary and Chairman of the Can Tho City People’s Committee were assigned to direct inspection and supervision activities, promptly rectify issues, and prevent the subdivision of bid packages, as well as the emergence of misconduct and waste. Resettlement work must continue to be given due attention, ensuring that people’s new living conditions are equal to or better than their previous ones.
