Dong Thap, August 19, 2025 – The Rach Mieu 2 Bridge was officially inaugurated today, marking a new transportation link between Dong Thap and Vinh Long provinces. The bridge not only eases traffic on the existing Rach Mieu Bridge and National Highway 60, but also promises to boost socio-economic development across the Mekong Delta region.

Other attendees included former National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Deputy Minister of Construction Pham Minh Ha, and Deputy Minister of Finance Do Thanh Trung.
Local leaders present were Le Quoc Phong, Member of the Party Central Committee and Secretary of the Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee, and Ho Thi Hoang Yen, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Vinh Long Provincial Party Committee.

This project is part of a series of groundbreaking and inauguration ceremonies for 250 projects and works nationwide, with a total investment of VND 1.28 quadrillion, held in celebration of the 80th Anniversary of the August Revolution and Vietnam’s National Day (September 2).
Construction of the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge began on March 29, 2022. The project has been hailed as a symbol of the resilience and self-reliance of Vietnamese bridge builders. It reaffirms the capability of Vietnamese engineers and workers to fully master the design and construction of large-scale and complex infrastructure projects, including cable-stayed bridges.

Speaking at the ceremony, Tran Tri Quang, Chairman of the Dong Thap Provincial People’s Committee, highlighted the numerous challenges faced during implementation, including the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, site clearance difficulties, and fluctuations in material prices.
Thanks to the close supervision and direction of the Party and Government, including Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, who personally visited the site three times to inspect progress and encourage workers, as well as the strong coordination between Dong Thap and Vinh Long provinces, the project has now been completed. The Ministry of Construction and relevant agencies have finalized all acceptance procedures, putting the bridge into operation.

The Rach Mieu 2 Bridge and its approach roads span 17.6 kilometers in total length, with a total investment of VND 6.81 trillion. The main cable-stayed bridge stretches 1.97 kilometers, designed with 112 cable stays and two main pylons standing 113 meters tall. The bridge deck is 21.5 meters wide, featuring four mixed-use lanes and a clearance height of 37.5 meters, ensuring smooth road traffic while maintaining safe waterway navigation on the Tien River.
Dong Thap and Vinh Long provinces will continue working closely to manage, operate, and maintain the bridge, ensuring long-term safety, sustainability, and efficiency. Chairman Tran Tri Quang emphasized the need to maximize the project’s efficiency by integrating it into the national transportation network and connecting it with other key infrastructure projects to foster the development of the entire Mekong Delta.

Throughout the construction process, over 300 engineers and workers worked day and night, even through Tet holidays and weekends, to meet the schedule while adapting to fluctuating material prices. Their determination, combined with the use of advanced technologies, enabled the project to be completed five months ahead of plan.

Building upon the legacy of Rach Mieu 1 Bridge (inaugurated in 2009), which symbolized Vietnam’s growing technological autonomy and replaced the old Rach Mieu Ferry, the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge continues its mission of enhancing connectivity between Dong Thap and Vinh Long, eliminating long-standing traffic bottlenecks, and promoting regional economic integration across the Mekong Delta.

The completion of the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge will help resolve chronic traffic congestion, improve traffic distribution between Vinh Long and Dong Thap, and strengthen the regional transportation network to meet the increasing demand along National Highway 60. The project also enhances national defense and security while boosting socio-economic development. Beyond improving traffic flow and reducing accidents, the bridge shortens travel time between Ho Chi Minh City and eastern Mekong Delta provinces such as Vinh Long, Can Tho, and Ca Mau.
