RACH MIEU 2 BRIDGE READY FOR INAUGURATION AMID GREAT ANTICIPATION FROM MEKONG DELTA RESIDENTS

VOV.VN – On August 19, the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge, spanning the Tien River and connecting Dong Thap and Vinh Long provinces, is expected to officially open to traffic. This national project is being completed to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19, 1945 – August 19, 2025) and Vietnam’s National Day (September 2, 1945 – September 2, 2025).

These days, at Package XL02—the cable-stayed segment, which is also the main bridge—contractors including Trung Nam E&C Construction and Installation JSC, Bac Trung Nam Infrastructure Construction JSC, Trung Chinh Co., Ltd., and Dat Phuong Construction JSC are conducting load testing. This is the final task of the package, so the atmosphere on-site is intense and highly focused.

“We’ve reached nearly 100% completion—once the load testing is done, we’ll just finalize a few components of the cable system. A few months ago, we mobilized maximum manpower during the peak phase, and now, most work is basically done. The workers are thrilled to see the fruits of their labor and are eagerly awaiting the inauguration day. Importantly, there have been no labor safety incidents so far,” said Mr. Can Manh Hung, Commander-in-Chief and Executive Director of Package XL02 from Trung Nam E&C.

The Rach Mieu 2 Bridge project is now in its final stage of completion

Currently, the final auxiliary components of the remaining packages are being completed. Workers and engineers are working diligently and enthusiastically after more than three years of relentless effort, braving harsh weather conditions to ensure both quality and progress.

“For me, the greatest joy is contributing—even in a small way—to society’s development and helping solve transportation challenges in the Mekong Delta. This is the fourth major bridge I’ve helped build. Because of the nature of this job, I’ve had to spend long months far from home, living and sleeping on-site for three to four months at a time, before returning home briefly,” shared Mr. Nguyen Viet Cuong, a consultant and supervisor for Package XL02.

According to the My Thuan Project Management Board (Ministry of Construction), after an accelerated construction schedule, the project has now achieved 99% completion. It is expected that by July 31, all work will be finalized—five months ahead of schedule—and the bridge will officially open on August 19.

Construction packages are being expedited to meet the completion deadline before July 31

Notably, throughout the construction process, the contractors have strictly complied with occupational safety regulations, implemented efficient and scientific construction methods, and avoided any major incidents.

“From start to finish, we’ve had zero fatal accidents. That’s rare for large river-crossing bridges, which are typically very dangerous. It’s also remarkable that this project is being completed five months ahead of schedule—most bridges of this scale are usually delayed due to challenging conditions,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Chief Supervisory Consultant of Asia-Pacific Consulting Co.

Every day, many residents from Dong Thap and Vinh Long visit the construction site to witness the nearly completed bridge and eagerly await its opening, which is expected to end years of chronic traffic congestion on the existing Rach Mieu Bridge.

Load testing is the final stage of the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge project

“With Rach Mieu 2 Bridge completed, traveling between Dong Thap and Vinh Long will be much easier and free from traffic jams. Previously, even on weekends and normal days—not just holidays—the existing Rach Mieu Bridge was always jammed. With the new bridge, traffic flow will improve significantly, and people are very excited for the inauguration,” shared Mr. Pham Van Thanh, a resident of Kim Son Commune, Dong Thap Province.

The Rach Mieu 2 Bridge Project is invested by the My Thuan Project Management Board under the Ministry of Construction. The bridge features four lanes, with a total project length of about 17.6 km. It begins at Dong Tam Intersection (the junction of National Highway 1 and Provincial Road 870) in Dong Thap Province and ends at Km16+660 on National Highway 60 in Vinh Long Province. The main cable-stayed bridge stretches 1.971 km, designed to Grade III standards with four lanes, and has a total investment of over VND 6,810 billion (approximately $270 million USD), funded entirely by the state budget.

In just less than a month, the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge will be completed and officially opened. At this stage, construction teams are working around the clock to prepare for the grand opening, fulfilling the long-awaited hopes of millions of people in the Mekong Delta.
